Core concepts

The central building blocks of our platform – how they fit together and how they help your organization work smarter with data.
Documentation: Core concepts

Whether you’ve just started using Homepal or want to deepen your understanding of how everything connects, this guide gives you a simple introduction to the platform’s core components: metrics, groups, dashboards, key metrics, and entities.

The goal? To make it easy to understand how Homepal works behind the scenes – so you can focus on what truly matters: making better decisions with data.

Metrics

Documentation: Metrics

The metrics catalog is where all relevant industry metrics live — ready to use from day one. As you connect more data sources, additional metrics are automatically activated.

Here you can:

  • Choose which metrics should be visible in your organization

  • Manage access and confidentiality (private or public)

  • Add organization-wide filters

  • View definitions and variations of each metric

The catalog is your organization’s single source of truth — everyone uses the same underlying data and calculations remain consistent everywhere.

Groups

Documentation: Groups

In Homepal, collaboration happens in groups — organized around teams, departments, or locations.

A group can contain:

  • Key metrics the team is tracking

  • Dashboards and other shared resources

  • Metrics that are relevant to their work

Groups can be public (open to everyone) or private (invite-only). Each group has one or more owners who manage content and permissions.

Groups are also the easiest way to control access in Homepal — you can assign permissions to data and features on a group level.

Dashboards

Documentation: Dashboards

In Homepal, you explore data through dashboards — a flexible workspace for analysis and visualization.

Build your own board of widgets with metrics, tables, or charts. Customize freely — down to the row level — and use user filters to display exactly the data you need.

Dashboards can grow with tabs, but we recommend keeping them small and focused for the best experience.

Dashboards can also:

  • Be shared publicly with external stakeholders

  • Be embedded into other applications or intranets

  • Be displayed on screens across the organization

Dashboards are your all-in-one tool for working with data.

Key metrics

Documentation: Key Metrics

With key metrics, your organization highlights its most important metrics — both strategic and operational — and connects them directly to company goals and strategy.

A clear overview shows how the entire organization is progressing toward its objectives, and how each key metric contributes to the bigger picture.

  • Strategic key metrics measure success toward overall goals and strategy

  • Operational key metrics track daily progress and performance

Management gains a complete view of who is working toward what, while teams can see how their efforts connect to higher-level goals — visualized through a metric tree.

Entities

Documentation: Entities

Entities are the backbone of your organization’s data governance in Homepal. Here, system administrators can:

  • Manage business logic and inspect the data behind metrics

  • Customize how data appears in tables and charts

  • Rename fields to match internal terminology

  • Create reusable data slices (standard filters) across the platform

Entities ensure that all data in Homepal stays consistent, understandable, and easy to work with — no matter where you are in the platform.
